Pte Alf Chambers - survivor of the Great War
Private Alfred Chambers volunteered to fight in the Great War and enlisted in the 11th Btn. The Suffolk Regiment.
His family received a letter dated 15th May 1918 to say he was 'Missing in Action' which must have been a great shock although the letter does say that this does not "necessarily mean he has been killed as he may be a prisoner of war or temporarily separated from his regiment".
They received notification on 8th July that Alf was a 'Prisoner of War' in Germany - Camp not stated.
A letter dated 14th July was their first communication from Alf and it came through the Red Cross. The Red Cross also delivered parcels which Alf acknowledged by signing a receipt.
Alf came home to live a full life in Stradbroke.
