Charles Ephraim Clarke was born in Stradbroke 1897 to Edgar and Caroline Clarke who lived at Chapel Cottages. Edgar was a boot maker and repairer and fathered 12 children - 3 of whom pre-deceased Charles. Caroline, his mother also pre-deceased him in 1913.
The 1911 census return shows that Charles aged 13 was working as an errand boy for G. Corbyn.
