Military of the First World War
(1) Private Fred Boast of the 1/4 Btn Suffolk Regiment. b.1897 and lived in Queen Street. He received two distinguished certificates, one from France and one from the Commanding Officer of the British Expeditionary Force 33rd Div.
(2) Harry Tilbrook.b.1874 and lived in The Hempsheaf, Queen Street. Harry was a survivor of the Great War.
(3) 2nd Lieut. RAF Charles F D Castell b.1899 and lived in Queen Street. Charles was a survivor of the Great War.
(4) (no picture) Gunner Ernest Hawes of the Royal Artillery Depot Base Draft Depot who died on 14th November 1918 aged 29 was the son of Robert William and Susan Hawes and husband to Hilda.
The military record of Ernest shows that he was 5ft 8inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37 inches. He lived at Verdons Farm and married Hilda Knevett at Stradbroke Baptist Curch on 20th October 1915. Hilda and Ernest had one child, Stanley Ernest who was born on 24th February 1918. The papers record the list of items returned to Hilda afer Ernest had been killed.

Hilda was asked to sign a receipt and send it back in the official envelope provided on 10th June 1919.
(5) Army Sergeant Charles Emmanuel Hugman Regt. No. 12736 of the Suffolk Regiment
He joined the 3rd Battalion the Suffolk Regiment on 31st August 1914 and stated his occupation as ‘Carpenter’.
His military discharge record dated 10th June 1919 partially survives but in poor condition. It states that Charles was 5’8” tall with a chest measurement of 34 ¾ inches. He weighed 112lbs, had a fair completion, blue eyes and brown hair. It also states that he was ‘wounded light by enemy air action’ on 22nd July 1917 just a month before his wedding although there is no surviving record of type of injury. Charles saw active service in the Northern Theatre of war.
He survived WW1 and died –registered in Ipswich in September 1977.
